Rhinoplasty is known as cosmetic nose surgery and commonly called a “nose job.” Rhinoplasty is among the most frequently requested procedures for both aesthetic and functional purposes. Rhinoplasty is often done for cosmetic reasons, but also to correct breathing problems caused by broken nose or misshapen cartilage between the nostrils. If the nose appears to be to long, thick, wide, thin, crooked, bulbous, or droopy, nose surgery may be considered. For older individual, a rhinoplasty may make the entire face look younger, particularly if the nose is “drooping.”

When performing rhinoplasty, surgery may be undertaken as an open, closed, or combined procedure, and may include minor skin reduction at the alar bases. Open surgery involves both internal and external incisions whereas closed techniques rely on internal incisions only. If transverse incisions are made inside of the nose (closed surgery), there is no visible external scar.

Surgery may be performed under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on patient and surgeon preference. Once the method of anesthesia is chosen it must be delivered in the appropriate setting. Although rhinoplasty can be a satisfying procedure for both patient and surgeon, the literature report an incidence of postoperative rhinoplasty complications ranging from 8 to 18%.
