Liposuction is the surgical removal by suction of fat stored under the skin and is not recommended as a substitute for proper diet, exercise, and counseling for weight loss and weight management. New developments could make liposuction safer and less painful. Although new technique has greatly reduced the complication rate for liposuction, potential complications still require precautions and careful monitoring.
The risk of having a complication after liposuction surgery is usually directly related to the amount of fat that is removed. The maximum amount of fat that can be safely removed by liposuction is up to 3 kg of fat.
As with any major surgery, liposuction can be complicated by excessive bleeding or infection, as well as problem with anesthesia. After surgery, few patients are left with scarring or rippling of the skin, and some need another procedure 6 to 12 months later to fix uneven results. This complication is often related to surgeon inexperience.
Another medical complication of liposuction could be a haematoma. This is a medical term for welling containing blood.
