Tummy tuck can dramatically improve your appearance and self-esteem. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area, and tightens the abdominal muscles. Tummy tuck is usually performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia.

There are varying degrees to the conditions that are corrected by tummy tuck and therefore varying techniques to achieve desired outcomes. The primary difference in the popular techniques widely practiced today is the shape and length of the skin incision.

Tummy tuck is done through a long incision placed immediately above the pubic area, which extends across the lower abdomen. The end result is a flat belly with a shapely waist and a scar well hidden in the bikini area. The surgery takes about two hours depending on how much tissue needs to be removed.

After surgery, the patient should definitely have a friend, family member or home health aide available for at least a week to help with getting out of bed, using the toilet, and others. Contact your surgeon or a plastic surgeon if you think you might want to have a tummy tuck.
