Police use radar for traffic speed measurement. Various devices incorporating radar speed measurement with variable message signs or other speed displays are commercially available. Although many brands and types of radar units are in use by officer, they all fall into two types: car-mounted units that can be operated while the officer’s vehicle is stationary or moving, and hand-held radar guns often used by motorcycle officers in a stationary position. A radar gun is simply a gun-shaped plastic molding in which the transmitter, receiver, and antenna are all mounted. The accuracy of radar measurement is high as long as the angle between the radar gun and object is small.
Radar speed is not only used to detect and record traffic offenders. Civilian also use a radar speed for various purposes such as measure the speed of pitched baseballs. Radar guns are also marketed for use in golf, tennis, hockey, soccer, and other sports.
